there is no problem at all in eating them Raw, you can eat them dried, they appear in many nibbles selections in
Mediterranean countries where they use them a lot or if you have the tinned variety that are in like a brine you can just add them to a salad, the dried ones are crunchy and can be toasted with spices for more flavour. Have you already eaten them or just thinking of doing so? If you have the ones in Liquid would suggest rinsing them before putting them on a salad. They are also wonderful in many different dishes. Have you tried Spanish Callo's (tripe)? Mind you they are like most pulses and cause havoc with the gasses in your stomach.

Chickpeas are awesome to eat raw.
when I was a boy I used to eat dried chickpeas as a snack and didn't even know there was any other way to eat them until I went to culinary school!

Unripe chickpeas are often picked out of the pod and eaten as a raw snack in many parts of India, and the plants are eaten there as a green vegetable in salads

They are perfectly safe to eat raw, just as soybean beans are, , straight from the pod.

However, to avoid salmonella and e coli infection, which you can get from the soil they were grown in, I would definitely rinse them very well with water you know to be clean.
