I test drove a Renault Megane, about 5 years old. It was fine and smooth but when I changed gear every time I let the clutch back in the gear stick jumped under my hand. When I was driving along it moved around when I accelerated or braked, not just a bit of shake but maybe a half inch or more jerk on the gearstick knob in one direction or another. Is this normal in Meganes this age or as I suspect was there something wrong? I didn't buy, went for a much smoother Fiat Brava in the end.

God.... you got scared... I can't believe it... and went for a lousy car instead....
No... it's ok... all Meganes built about five years ago do this. Mine does it too and it's in perfect shape... It has to do with the way engineers designed the gearbox. In order for it to break down less often they used a sort of rubber or something to take some of the shock, but because this is placed around the screws that hold the gearbox, it means they are not screwed as tightly as possible and it makes the gear knob jump back when you accelerate.
I know what I'm saying, but I don't know how to explain it to you... What I want you to understand though, is that the car was by no means broken...
Well....you just passed the opportunity of buying a special car... You shoud've asked this question before buying....
Enjoy the Brava, anyways....

It is not normal at all. It should have a problem in the gear box, the "synchros" of the gears. Wise decision not to buy it. But is the Brava in a better shape ?
