help! my email is screwed?

i have microsoft outlook, but i have to press the SEND/RECEIVE button to get emails. this is fine, and usually a box pops up that says details about the sending and receiving. but lately, the box has stopped popping up. does anyone know how i can make it so it automatically pops up again?
