To play DVD movies you must install a codec for them, just like any other movie that doesn't come in the format supported by windows media player. If you are a beginner note that there are many kind of codecs available and manually installing eatch one can result in conflicts , version mismatch and so on. It's better to get everything done by itself, meaning a codec pack that comex with al the regular codecs you'll need to play most movies... I would recommend you one of the following:
http://www.free-codecs.com/download/K_Lite_Codec_Pack.htm
or
http://www.free-codecs.com/download/ACE_Mega_CoDecS_Pack.htm
The last one includes just about everything, including player alternatives but it's not updated that often and it requires more space then the first one.
For every-day use, K-lite is the best!

My suggestion is DON'T USE WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER, because its too dumb to download codecs for itself. So I say is go to free-codecs.com and download the FULL KLITE codec pack, this includes a number of popular codecs and a Media Player called Media Player Classic which virtually plays anything you throw at it (even files with .ogg extensions). So download that and use that as your new default media player and if your file doesn't still play try using Gspot (part of KLITE) to see what codec it needs and download it, if still no luck then most likely the file is corrupted.
