Anyone know how the drive system on the cam position sensor (CMP) is lubricated? I hear a squealing sound coming from the CMP which is located at the rear of the engine as apposed to the front where the CMP is located for some of the other Ford engines. The sound seems to be worse when the engine is cold and is not as bad or disappears as the engine worms up which makes me think it is a lube issue. Has anyone replaced the CMP, I have seen them advertised for less than $300 including the drive system. Hope I don’t have to replace it.
Thanks

That sensor is driven the same way the old style distributors were. It has a helical gear at the end of the shaft that mates to the cam. The shaft is lubed by splash and vapour. I saw the same problem on several exploders ( ha ha) and broncos. Turn the engine to tdc, mark the position of the sensor and remove. The bottom bushing has gone dry. Once out, you can push or inject some Vaseline or high temp silicon grease between the shaft and housing ( sil-glide). Powdered graphite also works extremely well. The causes for this problem I have found so far is the wrong grade of oil. (Too thick and it doesn't splash well). Dirty oil,
defective PCV valve, ( doesn't suck out the acidic gasses) Low oil pressure ( oops, this one's gonna cost you) If it is low pressure, you can usually get away with replacing the oil pump with a high volume pump.

the general suspect is a belt, maximum often a potential steerage belt, yet often times an A/C belt. purchase a can of "belt dressing" and spray it on the interior the belts on an identical time as the engine is idling, (beware for the fan!) you will pay attention the squealing stop on the instant once you come across the perpetrator. next locate the clarification in the back of the squeal, frequently a belt it quite is in simple terms too unfastened. regulate the P/S or A/C unit to tighten the belt. it could pass a pair of million/2" while depressed heavily between the two pulleys.
