Sigh - my neighbor, who lives directly accross the street from me has invited me to YET ANOTHER jewely "party."
She sells these really expensive baubles to suplement her income & I DON'T want them!
I am constantly being invited to these types of parties & I do mean CONSTANTLY. I always say NO & they continue to invite me.
I really really really think this is rude to make your friends & neighbors feel uncomfortable & obligated.
I have a JOB where I make money - I don't try to force my friends to buy stuff from me so I don't have to work.
I know, I know - everyone's gonna say - just don't show up! But I live right accross the street from this lady & she checks with me over & over again every time she invites me to one of these things to make sure I will be there. Also - if I say I can't attend, she will give me the catalog & force me to buy something.
I KNOW I should be HONEST with her & tell her I just don't want this stuff. But I feel bad & her husband passed away & etc.

First off, these are NOT "parties". They are a sales call where you have the inconvenience of traveling instead of the sales person coming to you. Do not feel obligated to go-just tell this lady you are interested in that line of jewelry.

Read the article below. Miss Manners has a great take on the situation as well as pointers for getting out of it.

people like having an excuse to get togetheer and hosts like getting free stuff.

would you ever want to host one of those parties. go to the party knowing what you are willing to spend or go and dont buy anything if you want to be with the friends.

having too much junk clutters your life - use honest excuses and make more up if you really cant say no.

If you stop rewarding her efforts buy stop buying things, she'll eventually stop bugging you. I know you feel bad and it's hard to say no, but you can even go to the party, complement her work and respectfully decline to purchase. If you still feel bad offer to help setup or clean up w/o buying anything.

Don't think about her husband. The lady is a saleswoman. Respond to her accordingly.
