i definetly agree because i have seen a lot of pitbulls in my life and their temperment almost corresponded with their owners. i saw a very mean pitbull one time that was behind a fence trying to bite me and the owner didnt even care. i walked by all the time and the dog was always chained up and was never played with which made it crazy. although, most pitbulls i see are owned by good dog owners and they are perhaps the most well behaved dogs in the world! the teacher at my puppy class owns a female pitbull and when i first saw it, it was very friendly to humans but hated other dogs. after about a month of training by her owner, she isnt aggresive towards dogs anymore and it is very obidient. To this day I have never seen another dog as well trained and well mannered as that pitbull. So I definetly agree that if you have a bad dog owner, the pit will be bad, but with good dog owners, they are the best dogs ever.

Well the silly thing about people today is that the only dog attacks you hear about today are the PIT BULL attacks! Why don't you ever hear golden retriever attacks or malamute attacks? Huh? Its just because ONE pitbull attacks a kid and then the whole NATION thinks they are dangerous dogs. Thats why you see so many in the pounds! I do believe they have aggresive behavouir in them but nobody wants to deal with it and so you end up with a dangerous dog. When most dogs have an aggresion issue, the owner takes it to a trainer. When a pit bull has aggression issues then the owners simply put it in the pound! Pit bulls can be as nice as poodles if the PEOPLE would treat the dogs more fairly and help them!

I think that if you raise a Pit bull from pupphood with children and other animals it will grow up to be a well mannered and good dog. I have seen rotwilers that are muzzled and dangerous because the owners didn't treat or train them properly. On the other hand, I met a lady who has a Rotweiler who lived with very young children!

Sadly we hear more about Pit bull attacks than we do anyother breed as I guess it sounds more interesting to hear about a Pit Bull attacking rather than lets say a cocker spaniel or Lab. I believe a big part of it is how they are raised but there is also the contributing factor of their bloodlines. If the puppies come from along line of fighters or are a product of inbreeding, the chances are higher of them becoming agressive. Any dog can become agressive. With proper socialization and training, Pit Bulls can make great family pets.

I think the posters above did a very good job of explaining. The fact of the matter is FACTS DO NOT LIE. The facts in this are - American Pit Bull Terriers have BETTER Temperament Test passing scores than Golden Retrievers. The fact of the matter is Pit Bulls are not the biggest percentage of bitters when looking at bite statistics. The fact of the matter is any dog can and will bite if not handled correctly. The fact of the matter is the majority of the public in uneducated about this breed. They base their OPINIONS off of media portrayals of the dogs, not actual fact. It's easy for a Golden Retriever owner to say my dog is nicer than yours, because GR's have always been a family animal but the facts are that they bite too. They attack other animals too. It's a deadly game claiming your dog wouldn't hurt a fly and that is why bite statistics show that it's not just Pit's, It's all types of dogs.

To a certain degree, yes I do. The right owner, someone who is a skilled trainer and has extensive knowledge in the breed could likely raise a very happy, well mannered pit bull. But in the hands of someone with very little or no experience, I think it could be a set up for disaster. Understanding why dogs do what they do and what motivates them is a huge help in the training of any dog (regardless of breed).

But I also do believe that in some cases, blood lines should be considered as well. Would I ever take in a Pit Bull puppy that I knew came from illegal fighting lines? No. Why? Because tempermant is something to consider when breeding and these people breeding for the illegal fighting dogs are looking for that nasty tempermant, as they think that will serve them well in the ring. They'll breed bad tempered animals in the hopes it passes on to the pups. Good breeders always take tempermant of the sire and dam into the formula when choosing dogs to breed, so it is something to consider here. Again, I think someone well experienced in proper training and dog behavior will likely be successful with a dog from a litter such as this, but not for the every day Joe to try to accomplish.

Overall, I think the breed has simply gotten a really bad rap from really bad owners. Such a shame cuz I know some very sweet PB and I couldn't imagine them ever being mean.

It's a combination of genetics, socialization and raising them. I believe that 98% of pit bulls are great dogs. If a dog comes from parents with a bad temperament, is never socialized with people and other dogs, and never given any love or training, what would you expect?

It isn't fair that the whole breed gets a bad reputation for a few bad apples. And that the media jumps on the bandwagon for an immediate sensation. Many of these attacks are not even pitbulls! How many people know a pitbull when they see one?

Hi yes i think its how you raise them, my brother had one & at first when he got it i was very wary as he has a small child and all you hear about pit bulls is bad, but the dog was really lovley & kindhearted she was like a little baby & it completly changed the way i feel about these dogs, so i really feel for the people at the moment who have brought there pit bulls up well and have had to hand them into the police & the people who have kept theirs but wont be able to take them outdoors any more due to fear of their dogs being took off them xxxxx.

Well, I believe that it is not just Pit Bull, it can be any other breed too.

Yes I strongly believe it is how you raise them that has instill in them the aggression which causes them to attack people or anyone that comes near them.

Most Dog Owners did not able to see the early warning signs of their dogs developing aggression over the years of the dog growth.

This causes the Dog Owners inability to deal and prevent this pattern to grow in their dogs.

Example:
Many people think it is cute when a young puppy growls and snap at fingers that gets too close to his toys, they laugh and joke about it.

But what they do not understand is that this Dog is showing early signs of aggression and the Truth is that this puppy will probably going to grow up to be aggresive to family member or worse even strangers.

Early growling can develop to aggression that may results in such attacks.

Yes, I do in some cases. I believe that Pit-Bull Terriers were once gentle dogs, but were brought up to kill. I think that in the right hands, in a few rare cases, they could still be gentle. But if the parents were fierce and ferocious there is probably no chance in breeding them to be gentle again. Pit-Bulls now days are scary and should be put down if they harm humans and/or dogs.

MOST DEFINATELY !!! I have my own female pit that is awsome! She only catches what I tell her to. She obeys every command and doesn't even eat unles she is given a command. She is only 3. But recently I moved in with my BF whom also has a pitbull male, and he was totally out of control! With a little help from me I showef my BF how to treat his dog (Bull) and now he (the dog), also obeys his (my BF's) every command! They need love just like a poodle or schnauzer, everything need to know its boundries. Used to be Dobermans, then Rotrielers, now Pit's. The general public just needs to be informed and not scared by the media.
