Yes, metal utensils readily damage those non-stick surfaces. No, the teflon coating itsself is non-toxic. If you swallowed a bit, it'd pass through your intestines unchanged. However, HEATED teflon does emit a vapor that has been shown to be suspect. Whether or not that fact is sufficient cause to ban the use of the material on cookware has yet to be determined. I've gone back to doing my cooking in cast iron ware. Properly seasoned, that's exceptionally good material to cook with, plus it can last for generations. And it does not give off toxins. Oh - I do have one 8-inch aluminum skillet with no coating that I use just to cook my Eggbeaters for breakfast a couple times a week - I use cooking spray (only on the aluminum) to prevent sticking. Heh - Grampa loves to cook, I do!

The chief health risk in Teflon is perfluorooctanoic acid. This stuff can not be broken down by the environment or the animal body. It has been shown to reside in fat, and female reproductive parts and is in the body permanently once it's in there. It has been linked to birth defects, and the high percentage of cancer problems in the factories can be convincing for the cancer theory. The fumes from Teflon will easily kill birds.
When the Teflon is actually misused and separates form the pan it also releases aluminium, the digestion of which has been linked toward cases of Alzheimer's.
The best thing is to stick to cast iron or stainless steel cookware.
If you must use Teflon, only use soft utensils, like wood. Metal destroys your Teflon pans which, health risks aside, renders the pan useless in any practical sense in a short time. Used with care a Teflon pan can last years without degrading. Used without care you will be wasting a lot of money on replacements.

Yes, metal will cause teflon to come off. Don't buy teflon, it sucks ***. The best thing to use is cast iron. A little oil will keep most foods from sticking. If something does stick you can also scrub the hell out of it without hurting it, which is something you can't do with nonstick pans.

Yes, never use metal on teflon. Only use teflon on teflon and it won't ruin your pans. I doubt there will be enough of the teflon to get in your system to cause you any problems. But I am not a DR.

Yes to everything, but nobody knows for sure about the cancer part.
If your pan is flaking, throw it away & get a new one. Better safe than sorry!
And this time, use only wood or plastic utensils.
