Cigarettes get old when the package has been opened and sat out for a long period of time. You'll also know a cigarette is old when the tobacco comes out the end of the cigarette easily. This means the tobacco has dried up and gotten stale. You can still smoke them, but they will be fairly harsh. They will burn alot faster too. Too keep cigarettes fresh, keep them in your freezer.
Best thing to do, is not smoke at all :)
