Good question. It would be an enormous amount, equal to millions of barrels of oil daily, and solar is nearly free once it's installed. It's just a matter of time, within the next 50 years, until it's a necessary reality. And an electric car parked in the garage that helps store energy.
For the hundreds of billions Bush has squandered in Iraq, every house and business in America could and should have solar panels, now. If Bush had half a vision, America would be making solar panels and electric cars and selling them to the world, instead of blowing up weak countries for their oil. America could be proud of that, and making profits and friends, instead of enemies.

Actually, colder weather should increase the amount of energy because it would lower the resistance in ohms. But is would vary based on numerous factors, such as average sunlight and temp in an area, size of roofs, quality of panel, and whether it's a mechanical panel that moves with the sun or not.

To effectively answer that question you would need to know the type of solar panels used, the percentage of sun in each place and the temperature.
A solar panel does not function very well cold, under snow or at night, for example.

It would be enough to cut down immensely on the main system, but would not be enough to go "off-the-grid". You would need to have some sort of backup system for "rainy" days and in the Winter months when they daylight is shorter.
also what about those of us who live in forested areas, and do not always have direct sunlight, should we cut down our trees to accommodate the sunlight hitting our roofs?
