It doesn't sound like you really want them not to look like drones. It's better that the gowns would have same length since the ones who don't will stick up like sore thumb. Some styles would not look as good in some materials and colors, sometimes even length. The chances are better that you go to the extreme of "letting it be" or "drones". It is your wedding and they are your friends, you don't want to play push and pull as it is already stressful moment for you. Make a decision and let them know your consideration.

Im getting married Sept 15th and I was having the same problem. I live out of state where im getting married so im going through Davids Bridal where I can know what the dresses look like without me having to be there and see them. I have 5 bridesmaids with all 5 different bodies and different personalitys. Meaning, one thats 24 - 5'6 - large chested - and size 18 - very girly and will wear any dress - another thats 16 (sister) 5'3 - size 14 - not that girly but wants strapless and short - next my other sister 13 - tiny chest and size 4 waist - major sporty girl - wants long dress with straps - next girl is 24 5'2 - size 16 - isnt girly but will wear whatever I put her in - and last is 23 4'9 - size 22 - very girly and will wear whatever dress. So as you see I have a wide range of ages, shapes and sizes - pretty much I can have them all wear a strapless long dress but my little sister would be very unconfortable and then with all them being short except my moh and little sister I was thinking of going with a shorter dress. Davids Bridal like the comment mentioned above has it where you can pick the tops all different styles and the bottoms the same thing. Yes it may run more money then a regular matching dress but I want my girls to be comfortable as well as me in my dress because we will all be wearing them the same amount of time. I personally wanted them all to match until I looked around at pictures and saw where they didnt match but all wore a different top, bottom and mixed and matched the colors and it was perfect for each girl and personality.
Good luck and Congrats to you!

I just want to applaud you for allowing your bridesmaids to wear what they like. I have been to several weddings lately where the bride chose a color, and let the bridesmaids choose their own dresses, or the bride chose a dress and let the bridesmaids choose their own colors. I think that this is so much more fair since the girls usually pay for their own dresses.
Allowing them to have some choice in the matter also wll lead to a greater possibility that they will be able to wear the dress a second time.
I think that you have hit on the problem - you are being anal retentive. Just relax and let them choose what they want. You will be happy that you did it.
Try to have fun on your wedding day.

First off, your bridesmaids are going to love you for this. As both a former bridesmaid forced to wear a wreck of a dress, and a future bride whose bm's all have different body types, I speak from experience. I chose the color (a celadon/sage green), and the length (floor length) and told them to choose what they wanted. All the dresses look gorgeous together, but are slightly different. My MOH chose a strapless gown, with a mock-lace up back, my busty cousin chose a gown with thicker straps so she could wear a supportive bra, my other cousin chose a spaghetti strap gown with a beautiful back-detail, and my future sister in law, who is very flat chested, chose a halter style, which accentuated her tiny waste and great shoulders. They will all wear matching wraps during the ceremony, and then they can take them off if they want to for the reception. All of their shoes will match (with varying heel heights), as well as their jewelry. Matching dresses is so out, drones as you said. I would just do my research and find a designer whose gowns all kind of work together. I used Bill Levkoff.,he has a million styles/colors, but most of them have the same look to them, without being too matchy.

you could do this and yes it has successfully been done. it's hard to have them all wear the same dress because some may look good in it and some may not. you could have maid of honor wear a different dress than the regular bridesmaids. that is usually the best solution.

I have my maid of honor wearing a victorian lilac dress Long length and i have my 3 bridesmaids wearing lilac and they are tea lenghth. You can pull it off if you know how to do it. maybe just mix mathch 2 dresses. not all so have half the girls wear one kind and half the other girls wear a diffrent one. and maybe have the maid of honor wear a third diffrent from all of them. Good Luck

You can absolutely set the silhouette, the fabric, and the length. There is A LOT that can be done with different details, cut of the top, etc.

my sister in law initially wanted the girls to wear diff dress with same exact color and material, but everyone butted heads on finding the right color, so my sis in law ended up pickin out the dress herself and had the maid of honor in a diff dress instead... so, no, it has not worked in any wedding ive ever seen - but it would be cute!
