If a online store has any operations (meaning headquarters, warehouse, physical store, etc) in the same state as you are, then you will have to pay sales tax just the same as if you had walked into the store to purchase the item. Michigan has a sales tax, and Office Depot has stores in the state of Michigan; therefore, you'll have to pay sales tax if you buy a laptop or anything through the Office Depot web site.

If you buy from an online store that does NOT operate in your state, you do NOT have to pay taxes. For example, if you bought from Laptops R Us based in North Dakota, you wouldn't pay sales tax. Also, if you lived in a state with no sales tax (such as New Hampshire or Oregon), you don't pay sales tax even if you're buying from a company based in a state that DOES have a mandatory sales tax.

This is due to peculiarities of interstate commerce laws within the United States, and also applies to mail-order items, not just internet purchases.

If you buy a product, you must pay tax. If you buy online, you must pay the same amount of tax as would have been charged if you bought it in a store and not online. If the online seller does not collect the tax, then you must send the tax to the government yourself. Almost no one does.

From Office Depot, probably yes. The companies are required to collect sales tax for online sales if they have a facility in your state - I assume that OD has a store somewhere in Michigan, since they seem to be pretty much everywhere.

In Michigan you ALWAYS have to pay sales tax no matter what you bought. State law requires you to pay a use tax if the seller does not collect it. In your case because Office Depot has nexus in your state with retail stores, they would collect the tax from you at time of sale.

If Office Depot has a business presence in MI, they will collect sales tax on all sales to MI residents. Office Depot has outlets in virtually all states so any on-line purchases will be subject to local sales taxes.

Sales tax? It depends. If you live in the same state as the seller - then yes, you have to pay sales tax.

OR - if the seller has a retail license in the state you're in. (a few businesses have multi-state licenses, and have to collect in all the states included).

But generally - if the buyer and seller are in different states - no.

Sometimes. Your best bet is to put it in the shopping cart as if you were going to buy, it will calculate it and determine if you need to pay taxes before you actually buy. It does vary by state and merchandise.

Wow, you are getting some bad advice here. please take it from someone with experience: a big website like that might take care of it for you by ading the tax onto your order. If not, you have to save the receipt and add it on when you do your taxes.
