He is very litter trained but seems to try to punish when we do something he disagrees with. We got him and his sister from my Mom who is a Trucker. She would leave the cats at home for a day or two at a time and when she did this the male cat would poo on her floor next to the door. At Christmas we brought them home and the cat went a few weeks with out going on our floor. We thought he was happier with us being home everyday. However in his third week here I need the car and took my husband to work when I came home he had gone on the floor just inches from his litter box. Since that day it has gotten worse. Now if one of us is in the bathroom and he can not come in he will go and use the floor, and some times for no apparent reason when we are just sitting together on the sofa the smell will be awful and low and behold the cat has went on the floor again. This is getting very out of hand. I asked our Vet and she had no suggestions. I do not want to have to get rid of Him. HELP!

My cat did the smae thing. we got many sugestons but none works so we finally tried the last one. To stop her you need to start locking her in a small room with a window for light and her litter box. do this every day. The cat will soon learn that the litter box is the best place to go. Also make sure you clean her litter box twice a day this makes her happy that she is not walking is her own stuff. Keep doing this untill she poops in her box all the time. Then stop locking her with her box.

There are a couple of reasons and a couple of tricks you can try to fix it. First the cats are probable reliving the feeling of abandonment so they are actually trying to mix your scent with theirs to relive the anxiety and insecurity and strengthen the bond. Next time you leave you should put the cats in a small room with the litter box and let them know you be back, I always say I'll be right back it's takes some time but the cats trust you after a while, you could try short walks, and before you leave say I'll be right back it could take a few weeks but it's worth it they will get it. Another make sure their litter box is in a private area, I have mine in a closet just for them, they like and need the privacy and make sure it's not close to their food what so ever. When the cats start understanding the I'll be right back praise them for not pooing, but if they do don't yell it will only make their anxieties worse. They have gone through a big change and it will take time for them to feel at home and not abandoned so have patience they will come around. If there is a certain spot the cat goes, place newspaper down in that area. And give them lots of love and play time at least one half an hour with you and your husband. It takes time for cats to trust and doing these things will make a difference. Please just give it time. Good luck

Do the cats share a litter box? Some cats will have a problem with sharing a litter box with another cat. Try the electronic litter box that scoops the poo out as soon as its there if its a problem with sharing this should help! He won't smell the other cat with it.

I had a cat once though that would not use the litter box if there was poo in it and he was an only cat. I had to follow behind him with a scooper or it was in the floor beside the litter box. That's when I got the electric litter box and no more poop in the floor!

If this doesn't help, try this address it has alot of great info!

Have you ever actually seen your cat in the act of pooping on your floor? There has been a few times that my cats had problems with their poop not easily releasing/dropping off...causing them to get upset & jump out of the box & rub their butt on the floor trying to get it off. The times when I saw this I had to go grab some toilet paper & actually detach it for them...but there has been a couple times I found poop outside the box & can only assume that is what happened. Maybe that's what happened with yours.

Otherwise, I would try other things. Do you have a covered box? Some cats don't like them...try removing the cover. Does your cat eat only dry food? It could be constipated if there's not enough water in it's diet...try feeding some canned food & make sure there's always fresh water available. Feeding only dry food is also bad for the urinary system especially the kidneys.

Good luck!

Well...I can't tell you why they are going on the floor and not in the box...but a way you can try to make him stop it when you see him getting ready to carry him to the litter box and put him in the box and tell him to go in here not on the floor...and if you don't catch him in time to put him in the litter box...you can rub his nose in it and say bad and then put him in the litter box..By doing so you are showing him that is not good and that he needs to go in the box not on the floor...and its not being mean to the animal..its just some thing that works..but I am not saying it will...try it a few times if not then I don't know what to do..But I do hope you find some thing that works because i don't want you to get ride of him...lol..Good Luck!!!

You can't have too many litter boxes. Most cats do not like covered ones and like you have seen it makes it easier for another cat to attack because the cat is trapped in a covered box. I would have at least 3 uncovered boxes around the house. If the male cats gets too aggressive with the female drugs like prozac can help them. The prozac will make him less aggressive and help her be less nervous. Ask your vet for advice too.

Did you just ASK your vet or did you let the vet check it out? I had a cat who once went right by the cat box too! Turns out it had a problem that was really serious and ended up not being able to go to the bathroom at all. It was really serious because his blatter was expanding and he couldve died!!! If you asked the vet, let it check it out! If it looked at it, I dont have any sugguestions. Hope everything turns out ok!

I had that problem with my young cat, my advise is empty the litter tray after she's used it, if my cats litter tray isn't completley clean with fresh litter she wont use it, instead she will choose to go behind the sofa and what a pain that is to clean off a cream carpet!!

Cats generally won't go anywhere except their litterbox unless something is upsetting them. Are you giving him attention everyday? Some cats will do this to try to gain your attention if they are feeling ignored; and some cats will do this if they are feeling scared.

Upset cats will go to the bathroom in the place where the scent of their owners is the strongest, to try to cover up your smell with his. Sounds like it is working.

I would just suggest maybe getting him some toys, playing with him a little more, and if you catch him in the act of going where he shouldn't, spray him with water.
