Before they drag out their purse and start digging for the checkbook or money?

In years past, most people weren't in a huge hurry, so it was just normal practice to wait for a total. Also, they may be concerned about having their money out any longer than they have to. Too, they could be watching the cashier to make sure they're not charged twice for anything or that the cash register has been programed to put in the correct price.

They're not in a rush, like you and me. To us a purchase is a kind of transition, from not having, to having. The cashier may as well be a robot. For the elderly, the sale is an event in itself. It's an opportunity to connect with another human being at a time in their lives when small things are becoming meaningful again. "From children we come; to children we go." Instead of feeling irritated, offer to carry their groceries. Slow down and connect. :-)

Well my experience as a cashier they always feel like someone is going to rip them off or the total is going to be outrageous so they wait to see it with their own eyes before they write anything. Like.. "Did you get my senior discount!?"

This may be because as you get older you become more careful about displaying money. The elderly, especially women, are more prone to being assaulted and robbed, by young felons. Younger people are less likely to be "targeted", as they will put up more resistance to being robbed.

Why are you in a hurry? Don't you think that someday you too will grow "old"? Treat the elderly people you encounter with the same respect you would want other people to treat your grandparents or your parents with. That is a rule I live by. Someday you will be their age, how would you like to be treated?

I don't! I hate it when women do that, it's SO annoying. Personally if I'm writing a check, I fill out everything but the total while they're ringing everything up, so I can write down the total and hand them the check as soon as possible. I hate making people wait behind me, and I hate waiting behind people just so they can write a check or use coupons.

My guess is the world is different then when they grew up. Everyone is in such a hurry and they probably don't have those *hurry up* habits. Relax and let the elders do their thing.

because they are old and tired of being rushed. when you dont have much time left you may as well just relax and enjoy the ride.

Whatsa matter, you might miss that red light or that traffic jam?
Older people are more careful with their money and don't have their belongings out any more than they have to. We could learn about self-protection from them.
