she may have been tense. or she may have been in a bad mood thus sensitive to anything happening around her.
make sure the kids know to leave her alone while eating, not to force her into play, and if she tries to walk away when they pet her to let her.
good luck!

Keep the dog away from all children for a few days. I mean totally away in another room or kennel until you are sure it was an isolated thing. Time to ask the kids if anything happened to the dog when they were over the night before, did they torment her, fall on her, step on her tail or anything else. Then go over the dog from top to bottom and check for any sore spots.
If her behavior seems normal after a few days you can let her around your kids again, supervised only at first, if you feel it is safe, but I wouldn't let her around any other kids for a long time. If her behavior seems a bit off take her to the vet and let them do a good once over to make sure she isn't having health issues, brain tumor or chemical imbalance.

Contact a professional, If your dog is known to have even bared teeth at a person, child or adult. Your dog is a risk. Dogs do not just turn moody, they are ANIMALS first, then dogs. You must seek professional help to correct this now before she really hurts or kills some one.
You can go to prison for keeping a "red zone" dog and not getting the help she needs asap! Read "cesars way" by cesar Millan. The dog whisperer. He talks about this in two mastiffs. The lawyers who owned these two dogs, are now in prison because they did not seek professional help ASAP!
I know we all love our dogs and want to blame it on mood behavior. However a stable dog should NEVER show signs of aggression to anything. Least of all our family members and other peoples kids. Imagine your lawsuit for a simple bite.
GOOD LUCK & BE CAREFUL, and remember "cesar says" even a "red zone dog can be rehabilitated" And it sounds like this is in the early stages for her, "if it is her first sign of aggression" Get help for her then learn what you need to change, then read the book. Don't wait or guard her from other people, hoping she won't bite or attack. Waiting and guarding people from her will only make things worse for her.

From now on, watch her very carefully. She may attack if she thinks they are harming "her" six yr old. Definately keep noise and excitement level to a minimum.
Have all of the children ignore her and maybe she will get over it. Some dogs just do not do well with children or strangers.

I would just do my best to keep her separated if kids come around. My mom's dog is not good around kids so my mom is soooo cautious whenever kids come over. She'll put her dog in a bedroom with the door closed and a babygate up also. Her dog would only be mean if a kid went up to her, she doesn't go looking for them. But, you should just take that precaution .

Were the kids antagonizing her in any way? Was she trying to get away and they wouldn't let her? My guess would be that something was going on, whether you know it or not. Most dogs dont just attack someone without provocation.

bull dogs are fighters. i know one who attacks the soda machine at work. control it and learn to understand his behavior. anything can trigger them. they aren't very bright either. so he will have trouble understanding what is ok to paly with verses attack. they can become fixated on certain things, and just attack it. skateboards, cars, kids, soda machines. watch cesar milan with the bull dog. you have to desentisize. not an easy feat

what did the kids do that scared her. ask them if they did something to scare her? some times they just don't like a certain person. it doesn't mean she does'nt like kids.they could of had a smell on them she did'nt like who knows maybe she was having a off day..is she fixed? if not maybe she was coming in heat? i would not try to put them next to her again till you have figured it out. maybe they where horsing around and she felt they where going to hurt one of you...
