Number are somewhat deceptive when comparing armies today. Yes, the Chinese have an advantage in manpower, but how well trained is that army? How well equipped is that army? How well led is that army? These are usually the questions to have to ask when you talk about armies. For example, let's say China has 20,000 tanks compared to about 2,000 for the United States. But what kind of tanks are they? Most of the Chinese tanks will likely be either old T-72s or even older T-55s (think Iraq in the Gulf War). On the other hand, you have to consider that America has 2,000 M1A1 (or M1A2) tanks, which are some of the best tanks in the world.
You also have to consider the combined arms aspect. China's airforce, like its army, is very large. But is it very advanced? No. A lot of Chinese pilots are still flying MiG 21s or similar planes--planes that would be little match for F-15s, F-16s, F-18s, etc. Another issue you have to think about with their airforce is how well they can coordinate all of their airpower. While the United States has years of practical experience coordinating air groups in battle (either in training or in actual combat), the Chinese are quite limited when it comes to this. It's an important advantage that should be overlooked.
One other thing that bears examination is what kind of Navy each nation has. The Chinese have no blue water navy. The US, on the other hand, can project power anywhere on earth because of its large and extensive blue water navy.
How is China going to fight a war when America is blockading its ports? Where is China going to get its oil, iron, food, an everything else from?
With all of this said, China is still a growing power. They're working hard to modernize their military and build a blue water navy. That may or may not bode well for the future.
But to answer your question, no I don't think anyone has any real interest in attacking China now. As for the question of is China the most powerful nation on earth? No, not even close. China has as many, if not more problems than the United States. Finally, for your most interesting question, I'm not sure if anyone would attack China unless they were being attacked by china itself. Would America honor its pledge to defend Taiwan if China attacked it, or would it be too politically unpopular? I don't know.

Why would we attack the Chinese? I don't think it takes balls but reason to do so. If for some reason we attack Iran and China gets all upset and threatens some sort of attack. Then maybe I'll worry. Remember we have allies, more so than the Chinese. I hope this never happens.

Not including nukes which both countries have, numbers alone will not do the job. Most of China's military is armed with weapons so obselete that they are just slightly better than ww2 weapons. China is closing the gap with newfound riches from their cheap exports to the world. However they do not feel they have the military power to attack Thailand like they have been wishing for since the communist revolution. If they can't do that, exactly how powerful are they??

First of all, there is no reason to attack China in that they are our trading partner and friend, for the most part.
Are they the most powerful country? Probably not on a global scale but definitely within their borders. They lack the ability to project forces throughout the world effectively. That's their only drawback.

In the future, the only two real superpowers left will be the U.S. and China. Rather than start a war, I think we will both agree to mutual cooperation and more open trade that will lead to more normalized relations between the two countries. Neither side would gain from a nuclear war, so there's no real reason not remain allies. Also, in future, we will need to share energy resources.

The US military was far less than the German army of WW2. We would only defend not attack. China knows that and we have a mutual agreement. The Chinese people is the only thing China has to worry about.

While the potential size of the chinese army is completely bafaling, and going to war with china is a scary thought, according to a book i read for my college class in international relations theory, the us will eventually enter into a nuclear conflict with China.

Did not the Chinese fight with North Korea during the Korean war? Did or did not that turn into a stalemate? Size of an army doesn't mean a thing. How many people are fighting us in Iraq?

Back in the 1950's the Chinese had many border conflicts with Russia. A reporter asked Mao Tse Tung whether he was afraid of war with Russia. Mao answered, "Oh, no, we are not afraid of Russia. We will defeat them easily. On the first day of the war we will surrender one million troops. The next day another million, and then another million, and another, and another, and another. We can do this for about two months, but I doubt that they could continue for more than a week".

The chinese army is large, but they do not have enough rifles for everyone. If the Chinese were to attack, Nukes would be the only defense.
