What are the main advices for a novel literary translator?

I am working generally in translation and especially in literary translation and I hope that I will get your advices for me.

Well, I'm French and studying translation. As the person before me said, your grammar is not perfect, so I hope you translate into your own language (which is what people are supposed to do).

DO work on your grammar as grammatical devices often carry meaning which you need to be able to show on your translation.

Maybe take a few courses (I'm currently taking a class to prepare for a diploma in London), they are very useful. You really need to know translation techniques, although after a while you won't even think about them, just translate naturally.

Literary translation is EXTREMELY difficult, so if you're not that good, I'd advise you to first start with technical translation, and then in a few years, go on to literary translation.

I say, when you learn the language, make sure you have some knowledge of the culture.
Get other information about slangs, history & updated phrases.

I learned this after I start translating from one language to another.
But I decided to overcome this obstacle by reading more about the culture behind the language.
& it is really important.

My advice is to work on your grammar. You need perfect grammar to translate, and your question lacks it.
