the pproblem with that is that the audio/video mode button doesnt work on their remote (and i cant get it to program in), and there isnt an A/V button on my TV so I cant use my DVD player now. I dont have the instructions for my stock remote, and dont really see any button on there that looks like it would reprogram the remote to the TV. im sure every remote is different, but is there a general way or button on most remotes to reprogram the remote to the TV? and can i have both remotes activated at the same time

oh i have a toshiba TV/remote, the model number on it is CT-826 if that helps anyone and no i dont have the instruction book anymore

Nothing about programing the directtv remote to control your TV should or could effect the function of your TV remote.
Try changing the batteries in your TV remote.
