I found out yesterday that my boyfriend got me an engagement ring (It's a long story). I knew he would be getting one soon, even sooner because I knew he was getting taxes back. He thinks my finger is small (compared to his they are longer and slimmer). He thought maybe a 7. I have never been really big on wearing jewelry, especially rings. I remember getting costume jewelry from Claire's or something that was size 9 or 10. Are they the same as far as measurements? He said that it can be resized for free so it's not bad. Has anyone ever had that happen?

Oh, and he hasn't proposed yet, he said he wants to ask my dad first and everything before he asks. He's going to try and make it a surprise.

Oh yeah, and thanks, the occasion is more important, not the ring. :)

Oh, and I haven't seen the ring yet, only the box. He said I can't see it until the big day. :)

None of that sounds like a crisis to me, EXCEPT that your diamonds were damaged during resizing. My ring came from a small family jeweler and their store is very small, so they send everything to a goldsmith for resizing. Many companies do this - the people who are great at selling diamonds aren't necessarily trained in jewelry repair. And once my ring was resized, I didn't get it back in a new box - it was in a small baggie that had all my information on it. That's just how some things are. And of course, when a ring is made smaller, the band may have significant changes - you're losing two whole sizes, so an engraving that fit before may not fit any more, or it may come off when the metal is being soldered. That's something you should be prepared for, and now you know. White gold is actually not a metal. It's yellow gold that is treated on the surface with rhodium, which gives it that white silvery color. You'll find that your ring needs to be retreated every few years, because the normal wear and tear will wear off the rhodium and reveal the yellow gold underneath. That's normal, and something you have to be prepared to do with white gold. So the question now if what you want to do? If you feel a sentimental attachment to this particular ring, then send it in to have the diamonds repaired. If you feel that this is all a big pain and you want a brand new ring, then tell them you want a refund, or that you want the diamonds from the current ring reset into a new band AND the scratched diamonds replaced.

It has happened to several of my friends. It's pretty common. My dad says that there is a smart way to keep that from happening. He always tells my brother that if he wants to propose to a woman that he should know her ring size. He also tells him that it's not very romantic to come out and ask what size she wears and can give away the surprise of asking. So he suggests that if he is serious enough to want to marry a girl that he should first buy her a ring as a gift that is just simply a gift. If it fits he'll know the ring size. If it doesn't then he'll still now her ring size because he will be the one to get it resized with/for her. And then he can go for the BIG one and be able to surprise her without any complications. Good luck to the both of you and CONGRATULATIONS!

I gave a wrong size engagement ring! I was given the bad advice that a girls ring size is the same as her shoe size! What an idiot I felt like! Anyway, the shop did resize the ring for nothing. She just had to wait 3 days longer to wear it.
Kudos to your future fiance for talking to your father first!

Rings usually come in a standard size of 7. If you need it re-sized, it will be done free at the place where he bought it. If he bought it somewhere else other than a jewellery store, any jewellery store can resize a ring, costs under $10, depending upon the amount of gold they have to use if they are making it bigger.

I just got engaged in Oct. and initially the ring was too big. I went to Walmart and bought a package of those clear, rubber ring sizer things (?) just so I could show off my ring for a little while. Later, we took it back & got it resized (took about a week). Anyways, it ended up still being too big and it was cold outside. I lost it in a shopping plaza last week. Extremely heartbroken. :( Moral of the story: get it resized ASAP

No big deal at all. Most rings have to be sized, most stores have around a size 7, some women need smaller & others need larger. An idea is go to the store with your boyfriend, get your finger sized, the leave. That way he can get it sized before you're engaged & you don't have to see the ring.

I just got engaged last week and my ring is too big. I am getting it sized next week. However, in the mean time I had a jeweler put a "spacer" on my ring. It is a metal piece that will temporaraly make the ring fit. The jeweler can put the spacer on in a few minutes as opposed to the several days that they may need to keep it to actually size it properly. Congrats!

Well when he does give you the ring, you can take it back to the jewelry store he bought it from and they should resize it for free. Most of them will clean the ring for free once every so often.

It can be resized. Jewelry stores do not carry rings in all sizes - it it quite common to buy a ring and have it sized to fit.
