You should feed the cat at least twice a day, if not three times a day. The size of your cat determines the amount you should feed him. If it is a kitten, feed it a half a cup of dry cat food three times a day. If it is a larger cat, go with a whole cup to a cup and a half three times a day. Dry cat food is better for cats than the canned food. Canned food seems to cause cats, especially kittens, to get diarrhea. Remember, the softer the food, the softer the stool. Try to keep the cat on the same type food and not change it regularly because by changing a cats food can also upset their stomachs. Also, remember to never wet the dry food with milk. Milk is not good for cats, although some people think it is. Always make sure that the cat has fresh water available at all times.

Hope this helps.

Hi. A lot of cats will stop when they have had enough. Its hard to say how much he needs with out also taking into consideration his age and activity levels. There should be some general instructions on the can as a guideline. My advice would be to leave it up to him initially to decide when he is hungry and wants to eat. Weigh him regularly, maybe once and week, and if his weight goes up, then it's time to start cutting back. Actually in my opinion, it is easier to make dry food the cats main food and then supplement with the wet because then it doesn't sit there all day getting dry. And actually once I started checking the labels of the cat foods I realized that a lot of the dry foods had way more protein content than the wet. That's important because cats nutritional needs require a lot of protein. If you make a decision to switch to the dry just make sure to get a higher end one (such as Science Diet), otherwise your baby will end up eating a lot of by-products and fillers and then he will be fat anyway because he will be filled with junk. Just a thought. Good luck.

For a cat under a year, you need to feed kitten food. Over a year, cat food. HOWEVER, you need to feed ONLY DRY food, and canned food very rarely as a treat. You need to do some reading about the caring of cats....

I have 5 indoor cats. I keep dry food in their dish at all times. If a cat gains to much weight, it is most likely the type of food you get. I give moist food/catnip in the AM. Soft food, all the time, is not good for their teeth. I, also, keep after their litter boxes. I scoop them several times a day. You only have one cat, but to me, whenever I notice the box was used, I scoop it. Cats by nature like a clean place to go and that fact that they walk over everything....well, you don't want dirty paws!! One of their favorite toys is the wand with a toy dangling on it. I will sit on the floor and all of them love chasing it while I flip it around. I would advice getting the cat Vet checked for worms/shots and having the cat fixed. Welcome to the cat world. Mepurrs

For most adult cats one 5.5 can of meat is usually sufficient. That's if you use a quality canned food - Natural Balance, Blue, Wellness, Lick Your Chops, Avoderm, Felidae. Those products contain wholesome meat, not by-product meat, and will nourish the cat very well. With quality meat as his food you are not in danger of overfeeding him.

If the cat has not had a good diet prior to coming to you it may want an additional 3 oz. can for a couple of months. (NB and Wellness have small cans). My recently rescued cat was that way. After four months of an improved diet he now eats only about one can per day.

You are on the right track with the canned food. You might want to go to www:littlebigcat.com to read Dr. Jean Hovfe's article titled "Why Cats Need Canned Food" to reinforce you on that diet.

I find with our cat just to give him small amounts (1/2 cup or less) and refill his dish whenever he acts like he wants more. Cats like their food fresh,so it's not a good idea to put too much in their dish at once,if they don't eat all of it at one sitting, they may refuse to eat it. If your cat likes his food moistened, then smaller amounts may be better. Just try it out for a few days and see how much he eats, then you will know how much to give him at each feeding.

On the can there should be instructions on how much food of the specific type must be given, according to the cat's weight. Your cat sounds like he's about 4kg, which is average for a cat. If he is neutered, you must control how much he eats. If he is not, he will probbly maintain a good weight by himself, give him as much as he likes, unless you see him getting too fat.

Cats, unlike dogs, stop eating when they are full. If you aren't going to offer him dry food at all, make sure you provide him with some tartar control treats. Depending on how old he is, he may need more food. Kittens need more calories than adults.
