The 1 year-old is a male and we've had him since he was 8 weeks old. We adopted a 5 month old female kitten last night. Lots of groweling and swatting going on by both parties.

We are in a studio apartment so there is only one room and separate bath (where we keep the litter box and food)

I know this can take a week or so for them to get used to each other, but do you have any ideas on how we can ease this for them?

first and foremost, give the older cat your attention. the kitten will find a way of fitting into the situation... that's what young animals do. it is normal for cats to work out territories and status. and we all tend to dote on a kitten, since they are SO cute! but your older cat needs to not feel threatened. let the adult cat train the kitten... it's the natural way of things.
i have a near-monster of a cat because my dog adopted it and wouldn't let the older cat train it properly LOL

Our female cat was about seven months old when we adopted a stray kitten. The female took an instant dislike to the kitten and tried to beat him up at every opportunity. One of the tips I read was to wipe a cloth over the kitten and then let the older cat smell the cloth. Then rub the same cloth over your cat, so as to mix their scents together. I tried this along with all the usual tips, such as making a bigger fuss of the older cat and feeding him first. I must admit it was almost two months before the female cat fully accepted that the kitten was here to stay, but it's been worth it. They get along great now and love play fighting all day. You just have to be patient and they will eventually work things out for themselves.
Good luck.

I had the same issue, except it was a 2-year old female and we adopted a 3-month old male. It took about a week to get along. It sounds like you are cramped for space, but try a seperate little box and food dish for your kitties. Eventually, i put the boxes closer, and the food closer. For the first few days, they slept apart because they kept me awake, but now they play and sleep together!

I had a 4 year old cat and then we adopted a 6 month old cat from the animal shelter. At first the 4 year old picked on her, but as time went on they got used to each other and now they are OK around each other.

It'll just take time. Try not to play with baby cat more than your first kitty. In fact, if you just try to be normal, they will adjust to each other. I had the same situation, except my male first was 3, and he growled for a long time. Now 6 yrs later, they are the best pals!
