I know they are very popular probably because they are attractive.
One of the uses is removing iron filings from under your eyelids.
Another use would be find out where you are.
Simply point the north pole of the magnet towards the horizontal and slowly turn around until you experience the greatest force. You would now be facing the south magnetic pole. You just can't get lost when you have one these guys with you.
