I have asked My mum about this, and she says that not every-one up north eats fish and chips with their fingers, so perhaps it's just a regional thing that I should let go now I'm 43. ( I wish she'd have told me this sooner)

i have found that the posher the place, the less likely they are to object to this kind of behaviour - they are FAR too good mannered for that. the customer is always right.

you might find that you feel uncomfortable, or make your companions feel uncomfortable though, and i would say that in this circumstance being able to adapt your behaviour in order to make those around you feel at ease is more important than making a statement about your cultural identity. just because on this occasion you decide to behave in a way that corresponds to the cultural norms doesn't mean you've lost your identity.

is using your fingers to eat *really* that important a part of who you *really* are? if so, are you *really* the kind of person who dines at le gavroche? or should you take a pass? or are you *really* a person who is considerate of the feelings of your companions?

He wouldn't object but I bet he wouldn't be pleased .Do not lose your cultural identity because it is what makes you the person you are today..I would not dream of eating a kebab unless I had drank at least 6 pints of stong lager and the Indian reaturant was closed...

IAlthough I agree that it is important to retain your identity, this is not a time nor place to do it. Just follow the old saying...
" When in Rome, do as the Romans do." Perhaps try going someplace else.
