Could anyone out there who owns any of these dogs tell me roughly how much exercise a:

* Adult Samoyed
* Adult Lab/Golden Retriever
* Adult Cocker Spaniel
* Adult Staffordshire/Bull Terrier
* Whippet

Would need daily. I have looked at some of the breed requirements but they all say different times.

Thanks

Adult Samoyed: they require energetic outdoor exercise every day. In hot weather, exercise them in a cooler area.

Adult Lab: They require pleny of exercise and love to swim.

Adult Golden R.: They need regular daily exercise. As their name implies, fetching is their favorite past time.

Adult Cocker S.: They need regular walks, English variety demans a little more.

Adult Staffordshire- Bull T. : Needs regular daily exercise.

Whippet: Needs the most exercise. Big open fields and daily runs are crucial for its health.

I am answering for the adult samoyed:
First, sorry to say, my samoyed is not quite an adult yet (she is 4 months old). But right now if we don't give her half an hour in walks and a couple of hours of running around the backyard everyday, she will be way too hyper and get into all sorts of trouble (stealing our boots, chewing the wall, etc...). However, for the second part, she is content running around our fenced backyard by herself- she's great at amusing herself with balls, old brooms, sticks. So we're anticipating having to give her a lot of exercise when she is grown up. They are great dogs though, sweet, gentle, loyal, and giving them enough exercise also helps prevents bad behaviors such as boredom barking and excessive chewing. Watch out though when your dog is alone in the backyard- they love love love to dig! Good Luck!

Also from research I have done, if you were to rank all the dogs above in the order of how much exercise they need, it would look like this:
1. Lab/ Golden Retriever (depending on if you have an English or American Lab- since the Americans need a LOT more exercise)
2. Samoyed (depending on dog could also be #1)
3. Stafforshire/ Bull Terrier
4. Cocker Spaniel
5. Whippet

I dont think time is really a factor it the quality of the exercise. Time wise rule of thumb the larger the dog the more time it needs except the the whippets they are high energy dogs that need extra time. You can walk your smaller dog for lets say 1/2 hr the larger dogs should get 45-60 minutes. You can cut down the walk time and add quality play time, running, frisby play etc. Each dog has a different limit once you take it out a few times its easy to find. Dogs who do a lot of backyard play dont need that much waling time. Walking time a more an obdience function than a real exercise for backyard dogs.

it was said that the dog doesn't get much exercise right now because of the winter weather.

it is hard when winter sets in especially how cold it's been this winter, but make sure you dog gets other form of exersice. (tug of war, tossing of a ball in the house, getting on the ground and playing with the dog ect ect ect)

I think it's much like a human where you want to raise the heart rate and maintain it for a while. This can be done in the winter months and the bonding with your dog (especially when you get on the floor with it) is greatly deserved.

My dog has a stuff animal that is made for dogs (hard to tear up and destroy) and we play fetch in the house with it. It is a small toy and will not harm anything when thrown. She loves her fetch and will do this for more than a half hour before it tires and lays back into her bed for a nap.

I have a 4 year old Lab and he loves to run but right now it's cold out so he doesn't get much exercise but come spring and summer he's out running for at least an hour a day.

Every dog is different as people are. A dog will let you know when they get tired. Actually the more exercise an animal gets, the healthier they are.
