plural Scampi, also called Dublin Bay Prawn, or Norway Lobster (Nephrops norvegicus), edible lobster of the order Decapoda (class Crustacea). It is widespread in the Mediterranean and northeastern Atlantic, from North Africa to Norway and Iceland, and as a gastronomic delicacy it is commercially exploited over much of its range, particularly by Great Britain, France, Denmark, and Italy.

Scampi is defined in UK food regulations as the whole tail ofNephrops Norvegicas which is actually a lobster. Common names for this species include Dublin Bay Prawn, Norway Lobster and Langoustine. UK regulations don't apply to scampi sold as ' breaded ' so breaded scampi is often made up of a mixture of related species and usually includes prawn, squid and the much cheaper Korean scampi. In the US and Canada scampi has a different meaning. There it refers to a dish of shrimps cooked in garlic and oil.

Shrimp Scampi and Gambas AlAjillo both have olive oil, shrimp,
Scampi aside from being an Italian word for a type of prawn, includes butter and white wine and is often served with some type of pasta. Gambas al ajillo (my favorite tapas) on the other hand usually does not include wine or butter and is served with some bread as a tapas or with some rice and is Spanish in origin.
Usually used for battered or buttered shrimp

The north pacific prawn is what it started out as but then 80% of scampi in the uk was manufactured from monkfish tails until very recently when monkfish has become a delicacy in its own right and prices soared so manufacturers are going back to prawns.
