All part of our mamaillian make-up, Body hair serves many purposes, but first consider the fact that as we have developed, we have grown larger, and our body hair has diminished, partially due to diet, and partially due to our environment and our adaptation to our own suscess as a race of higher mammals.
Hair is an insulator - retains heat in the cold months, and forms a sun screen in the summer months. since 80 % of our body heat escapes through the tops of our heads, having a nice thick head of hair in the winter is vital to survival, whenall you have on is your birthday suit.
Hair is a cushion and a protective layer to protect the more delicate skin underneath.
Hair follices exuded oil that mixed with slaked skin, and dirt that stuck to the hair shafts covering our bodies, - a raincoat of sorts, and also some measure of UV protection. Also those oils carried a musk scent common to the members of our tribe - and identifier of friend / relative. A scent that was recognizeable to the group, like and accent.
The matted hair was home to lice, bugs, and all manner of wiggly things, mutual grooming was essential to maintain some degree of relief from the parasites, so social bonds developed - much as we see mutual grooming going on with gorilllas and chimps today.
Hair is natural camoflage in the forest and jungle and savannah, you roll in the dry dusty earth of the desert floor of the savannah, and take 3 steps into the waving grass and you are all but invisible. Your Hair is your Marking, your Identifier, Your Fingerprint, Your hair patterns are unique unto you - no one else has exactly the same body hair pattern as you, or the same color pattern as you do, - this was sepecially true when your anscestor walked the earth 80,000 years ago..
Today hair is still a mark of social import. Having it is favored over not having it, unless you can have it - but elect to shave it all off instead. (????)
The Color of Hair is Very important to most of us - people absolutely dohave preferences when given a choice between brunette, Auburn, Brown, Blonde, and all other shades. Then thries straight, curley, frizzy, wavy, not to mention short, long, poofed, corn rowed, pompadoor, permed, crimped, waxed & ribboned, ironed, straightened, razor cut, dyed, bleached, tinted, diprd, tipped, high-lighted, moussed, gelled, blow-dryed, hot-combed, jerry-curled, oiled, bryl-cremed, butch-waxed, witch hazeled, hair sprayed, ratted, parted, pig tailed, french-braided, pony-tailed, bowl cut, buzz cot, aberdeen specialed, blocked, and on and on -
Women pluck their eye brows and then pencil them back on.
Women have eyelashes permanently tatooed om their eye lids, (Boy is that scary looking).
Women wax their legs, and pubic areas, - (no thanks).
Body Builders & swimmers shave all the hair off of their bodies from the neck down , pne for speed in the water, the other to show off the definiton of their musculature.
Women gave soldiers departing for War a lock of their hair for good luck.
Hair in our noses helps to trap inhaled impurities such as dust and other airborne contaminates, before they get to ouf lungs.
Eye lashes protect the delicate membrane covering of our eyes, and help to fan away airborne particles of dust & debris.
Hairs inside of our inner ears allow us to "Hear"
