Have been infected by Trojan Downloader. It is lodged in dllhost.exe, a vital part of Windows, so cannot be dislodged. Virus does not appear to be downlaoding anything but the same 5 files every day. avast! stays on top of it but PC is not running quite right. Will system restore help and if so, how long will it take?

You may need to switch off System Restore as back up files may be hiding in there, and it will just restore itself. Go to Start - programs - accessories - system tools - system restore.
Run your anti spyware in Safe Mode. To get into Safe Mode repeatedly press the F8 key after the bios screen loads but before Windows loads. You'll know if you made it because the screen will be at 800 x 600 and your pc will be slow.

You need to install one firewall.
The Windows firewall doesn't stop malware on your pc from dialling out.

You need all these anti spyware programs;
http://www.ewido.net - AVG(Ewido) anti trojan.
http://www.safer-networking.org - Spybot Search and Destroy anti spyware. Use the Teatimer settings to protect Internet Explorer, and the Immuniser to stop malware getting on your pc.
Spywareblaster works with Internet Explorer and Firefox. It won't uninstall spyware that is already on your pc, but it will prevent hijacks and other malicious changes to your browser.

There are two types of System Restore. XP has a built in partition with a utility called system restore that enables you to restore your computer to an earlier time. This will take less than twenty minutes usually. Go to Start ,Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Restore. Then click button that says restore my computer to an earlier time, and follow the directions.
A FULL system restore, that does a reformat is done with a restore CD that a few good manufactures supply with a new computer. That takes, frankly hours, because you need to back up your files, reformat and restore the computer, get all the 80 or more Windows updates, reload all your applications, reload application updates etc. and can take up to 8 hours or more.
I suggest you try the former restore first, then do a google search typing in the name of your Trojan for directions on how to remove it first.

Unless you made a very considerable amount of changes to your system, or your processor and memory size is very low, there is no good reason that your system restore should take that long. Its likely that you've restored to a point that is incompatible with hardware or driver changes that the restore point does not account for. In my experience, such a situation has led to the need to reformat, but I'd hold out until you're certain its just stuck.

sytem restore will not help in removing a virus because it doesn't erase the virus/trojan. you need to delete it manually i have answered this before, go here for instruction.
