You can get a flute starting about about $150 (on e-bay). These are brand new flutes, however the brands are not as reliable as your more major brands.
For a basic beginner flute you can plan on spending about $500 to $700 for an armstrong, gemeinhardt, or emerson. These are the three major flute makers and are the most reliable. I started on an emerson student model and loved it.
The intermediate models that come with a solid silver head joint and silver plated bodies start at about $700 and go up to about $1,000. I would also stick with one of the three major makers for this.
Your advanced models start at $1,000 on up. These are usually solid silver head, body, and foot joint. (Not advisable for the beginning flutist)
If you are buying for a student who is thinking about playing flute start with a student model. I wouldn't buy them anything higher until you know for sure that they are going to stick to music. Also, start them out on a closed hole flute, as for finger position. If they are young make sure it has an offset G. )Most of the student models do have offset G.) I currently play on a Gemeinhardt intermediate model french (open hole). It has a solid silver head joint, and plated body and foot. I love the sound of it, but really wish I could have my solid silver. :)
Below are a couple of sites you can check out. They have the different models available, and Flute world you can get an idea of price range. Also, if you search on e-bay make sure to order from the US.

I'd say to SCRATCH all the other messages you got in response to your question for suggestions on where to buy. For student flutes you do NOT want to start off on a total piece of crap so you can get them (believe it or not) in 100% playable condition for between $30-100 easily. I've sold MANY Gemeinhardt student flutes in mint condition for $100 or 125 inc. shipping during the summertime. Intermediate flutes sell a little higher and you can find them (depending on manufacturer) anywhere between $70-300 easily, and more-professional line flutes are usually from $500+ depending on materials used for manufacturing the flutes and company, etc. If you have any questions, I can give you some suggestions, etc. if you'd like to email me at flutelvr@37.com . Good luck!

It depends on what kind of flute and what level of player you are. Flutes can go from around $300 for a basic beginners flute on up to tens of thousands of dollars for a professional model.
Armstrong is a good beginners flute.

a brand new one is usually between 250 and 600. depending on the brand. mine was 350, it was an Armstrong, which is a really good company. they are really worth it though, because you dont have to buy reeds and all that. just the flute, and occasionally keypads. just be sure to clean it really good when you get it, they mark up pretty easily.
