I have put it in neutral, then turn the 4x4 knob but it remains in low. I tried reversing, I tried to change it in park while turning the knob. It is still stuck in low.

Is the vehicle stopped with the shifter in neutral, when you attempt to shift out of 4x4 LOW? Does the 4x4 LOW indicator remain illuminated as you are attempting to disengage 4x4 LOW? The person advising you to remove the shift motor, and attempt to manually turn the rod to the 2WD position is asking you to damage the alignment pin inside the transfer case. Because the engagement process for 4x4 LOW is a two stage process internally, if the plastic shift fork bushings are worn out, there will be enough slack between the shifter fork and the sleeve to prevent the shifter rod from rotating the distance required to engage/disengage. To repair would require removal of the transfer case and disassembly.

There is an electric servo motor on the backside of the transfer case that basically rotates its own complete assembly wher just trying to rotate the linkage while under pressure. When this happens low is the range it winds up stuck in. There are timing marks in the castings that can be realigned with the mounting bolts loosened and rotate the housing counter clockwise if I remember correctly, I've done it a couple of times but it's been a few years since. There should be no parts that need replacing just a mechanic that knows the procedure or a shop manual to explain it.
