black = negative but is this the ground wire?

Black is ground. It really doesn't matter which wire is plugged in where just that they match on both ends. If you have a gold wire and a copper wire just make sure that they are plugged in the same way on each end. Also on the wires one side will be smooth and the other will have a ridged or line marked on it, this is to help you make sure they aren't crossed when they are connnected.

No, the strong looking copper wire is the ground.

In CHEAP speaker wire the "gold" colored metal in the POSITIVE lead is usually COPPER...Then the "silver" colored metal in the NEGATIVE is usually ALUMINUM.
