Hello Alice,
I also assume you are looking at this as a career, so I will aim your answer in that direction: The people who deal the cards are dealers, and going to school is not required. I had a friend who went to school teach me 12 years ago, so I never went to school. You do need to start out at a "lower grade" of casino, where you will not make enough money to survive. After a few months of practice you will improve and get a better job. In most cases you will continue to work your way up until you have a job on the strip, where you will encounter your first "extra board".
An extra board is a way to keep you as a part-time employee so you receive no benefits. No vacation, holiday pay, sick pay or insurance. This can last as much as 5 years before you become "full-time",and can be structured in many ways. You may be scheduled only as needed, working 5 days one week and then having 3 weeks off. The worst are the casinos that want you to call in to see if there were "sick calls" that need replacement. You would need to call into the pit at 6:00 AM, 2:00 PM and 10:00 PM. Three times a day, seven days per week. These calls are required, so you would never have a day off!
As for the bosses: What is commonly referred to as a "Pit Boss" is actually a "Casino Floor Supervisor". This person will oversee 4 - 6 games in his/her section. The "Pit Boss", or correctly titled "Pit Manager" will oversee 6 Floor Supervisors. Above the Pit Manager will be the Casino Shift Manager, who oversees the Pit Managers.

Hope this helped. If you have any other questions, please ask.

There are two major terms used for people who deal cards at a casino, both of which are correct: Croupiers or Dealers. If you have an apptitude for cards then the training is usually done on site at the casino
The people who oversee card games are usually known as Pit Bosses/Managers.
Hope this helps and good luck as I assume you are looking to do this as a career.

We are called Live Games Dealers and we call the pit supervisor "floor!" when we want their attention. And we are trained for 3 weeks before being allowed on the gaming floor. Its a fun job most days because you get paid to play games.
