When I was 19 I left home for the first time. I was going to study in America and I remember my father taking me to one side at the airport shortly before I went through to departures.
He said he had a useful gift for me, a tip to stand me in good stead and a word of advice I should consider.

The gift? Some compactable, handbag safe, nail scissors. I still have them and they really are quite useful.
The tip? Always warm the pot before making tea. He was right... it makes a difference!
The advice? If you see someone on a street corner moving as if dancing to new age music yet there is no music present. Someone who looks like they are dodging imaginary raindrops for no apparent reason. Someone who looks like they are morphing back from a dream sequence in that wavy way they did that special effect in old movies... Well, just remember, it could be God. After all he does move in mysterious ways.

Ok my dad had a sense of humour but....

Oh and not something specific to a 19 year old girl leaving home but something you could pass on to anyone.

Just a little not. I am looking for an answer in three parts here.

Gift should be something physical that is given to you.

Tip would probably be something not that serious but useful nontheless. Like stain removal or such things.

The advice would be something that can maybe make a real difference to your life or something to stand you in good sted as youmove through life.

I hope that helps with your answers.

rmfly - I like your answer. I would say that your tip is more advice and would love to hear what the third part would be.

This is the first time I have been unable to select a best answer so I am going to have to leave it up to the public vote. I am so sorry to do this but there were many answers I liked!

The gift would be a journal and a pencil because life's journeys should be recorded.
The tip: Keep yours eyes on the finish line. You can accomplish anything that you want to as long as you want it badly enough.

The journal has been replaced a dozen times. The tip was from my mother when at 14 I found myself entered into a 100 yd dash race without my consent. I was not a runner of any kind, always sort of slow moving and when I asked to be removed from the list I was bluntly told to run or fail Phys. Ed.. When I complained to my mother, hoping she could get me out of it, she put her hand on my shoulder and gave me that tip. I came in second out of 18. Not bad for a tortoise.

Firstly....Your Dad SOOO rocks!!!! love the humour :D

Gift: seeds are a great idea or maybe a simple piece of paper in the shape of a heart with "I love you" written on it to put in your wallet so each time you look you are reminded that someone in the world who knows you well really thinks you are the bee's knees.

One tip: I know I am forever reminding my kids to "Look after your feet and your teeth - Both have to last you a lifetime" and

A bit of advice "Drink at least 2 Litres of fresh water a day."

Gift: A Bible.

Tip: If a friend asks you for a loan, say no. It will hurt the friendship. If you have the money and can afford it, give it to them. If not, tell them you can't afford it. This way, you will keep your friend.

Advice: Be careful of who you let ride in your car. If you are stopped and the police find drugs, open container, etc., the driver is responsible.

Gift: a baby tree for someone to plant and watch grow with them
Tip: If you always speak your mind, sometimes people will remind you that your mind is stupid.
Advice: Always go for your dreams. You may not get the one you were hoping for, but the journey is the best part of the trip.

The tip? Always put your name on your papers! In other words, take credit for your great works!

The advice? Treat people the way you'd like to be treated. Enough said.

I will gift my eyes after my death so that someone blind could see the ever beautiful Mother nature.
One tip would be, ''Give more and Expect less.''
Only advice is,''when you feel down because you didnt get what you want, just sit back and relax, because God has a better plan for you''.
