Definatly take him to the vet they will advise you what to do, they will only put the cat down if it is absolutly necessary and if they do think that then it must be for the best and would be cruel to do otherwise. I'm sure your cat will be fine with the right type of medication, to get to 20 is fantastic! good luck with it :)

Ditto - take him to the vet. My elderly cat has started to lose weight very slowly, and she seems to have a small moveable lump but she's otherwise healthy. She still chases string and a laser light, and loves just sleeping on my lap. The vet has said we'll just monitor her, but as she's not in pain he won't put her through any unnecessary tests at her age. Your vet will probably say that if your cat is happy and not suffering, then leave well alone, but he might have some good recommendations about diet etc that may help your guy.
PS: Start taking good photos. One of my cats died suddenly and all the photos I have look out of focus.

Hiya, How lucky are you to get your cat to 20! as you know this is very old for a cat and as long as he is not in any pain there would be no need to put him to sleep. Pay a visit to the vet, let him advise you they will not put him to sleep unless it is absolutely necessary. My cat was very old and he lost weight, but i knew when it was the end. Its a very distressing time as they are part of your family. I have just lost one of my other cats he had cancer. And people will think i am a crank but i took him to the pet crematorium and had him cremated. His ashes are in a lovely little box on my window and i dont really care what anyone thinks. It was a lot cheaper cause i took him myself, So give your cat lots of love, tell him everyday he is loved I do with my cats, and always remember when it is finally the end you gave him the best possible life and he knew he was loved.

Most importantly, a cat must eat food for a cat and not for a dog or other animal. Cats require Taurine. Without it, blindness will occur. In addition a cat requires different caloric values than a dog. Cat food is higher in calories, Water is the only acceptable drink for your cat. Besides quenching thirst, it helps to provide cleansing of the kidneys through urination, just as it does for all animals. Milk can cause diarrhea, causing gastric upset so should not be fed to cats. If one feeds dry food, a good quality canned food should also be incorporated into the diet. Easier to digest and fills the stomach instead of with dry food just causing the pellets to swell up with water, for that false full feeling. I have had cats who preferred only dry, others that have preferred only canned, but they will eventually eat the canned if you find the right flavor.

A friend of mine had a cat that was also quite old, i think somewhere around 22 years old. The cat also had fits and they took him to the vet. It turned out that the cat had diabetes. But it wasn't the end for kitty. With the right medication and care your kitty, he should be okay. Good luck.

I know exactly how you feel but he needs to go to the vet especially if he has had a fit and has lost weight. My friend had to have hers put to sleep immediately after Christmas so I do know how you feel. Her cat had been in hospital the Friday before Christmas and then she had her home on the Saturday and then she got weaker and weaker over the holiday and finally she had to let her go on the Wednesday. It is heartbreaking I know but unfortunately it has to be done if necessary. I hope you can cope and that you will be okay. Thinking about you.

This happened to a friend of mine. She did eventually go to the vet and the cat was put to sleep. It was an old-age thing, with no pain. Just time to go.

If you don't want to risk a visit to the vets, then try this site http://vethelpdirect.com/. It helped me with problems about my dog and put my mind to rest. It's an English site but that won't cause you any problem unless you need to find a vet - and lets face it - that's what yellow pages are for.

gosh hes lucky to have lived so long, but i'm afraid u do have to take him to a vet he may be able to give him some medication as he seems well otherwise, but if he does eventually have to be put to sleep, just remember hes had a long and im sure happy life with u and he will pass peacefully, rather than suffer ill health
