My auntie and uncle want a puppy. They live in a good sized house with a medium garden. They are able to give it around an hour exercise in the week and more on weekends. They have been looking at Golden Retrievers and English Springer Spaniels but they're not sure. Which breed do you think would appeal most to them.

Many thanks.

* When I suggested the Goldie and Springer, I didn't mean they were the only breeds my aunt and uncle wanted. These were just the breeds they were looking at.

Sorry if i confused you

* The puppy won't ever be alone because my uncle and aunt work different shifts. At those times when the pup will be left alone it will only be for a max of 3hrs.

It takes about 5 minutes and its really simple and will suggest different breeds.

I put in some answers from what you stated in your question, and this is the list I got:

(you should re-take the test (1st link) incase I put wrong selections)

Good Luck though!

I'd say that it would be best for them to go to their local animal shelter. Petfinder.org is a great website that helps people looking for pets find pets from their local shelters. If they are looking for a spaniel-mix and not just a purebred dog, they can find one here as well. Once they do go to the shelter, they should have considered what kind of dog would best fit their lifestyle.

But the first things to consider are exercise and temperament. Most dogs need at least two 20-30 minute walks per day in addition to any play time or running around in the yard. Also important is your aunt and uncle's personalities. Are they an active couple or are they more low-key? Animal Planet has a great section on their website (http://animal.discovery.com/breedselector/dogselectorindex.do) that allows you to discover what breed is best for you based on your lifestyle. I agree with Cesar Millan (the Dog Whisperer) that what dogs need are: 1.) Exercise, 2.) Discipline, and 3.) Affection. Some breeds (and individual dogs) need more exercise and discipline than others. It would be best if your aunt and uncle considered what they have to offer in terms of time and commitment first before zeroing in on a certain dog or breed.

I think that they shouldn't so much worry about what breed as much as what love any breed can bring. In experience however I have found Pugs to be a wonderful breed for the young and old alike. They are more attention dogs than excercise dogs, as with any dog they need excercise BUT they cannot be excercised near as much as other breeds so might be worth looking into. As of now I have a Pug that was picked out for my 4 year old son. PERFECT pick he is NEVER aggressive, playful when initiated to be so, but calms quickly also. I call him a love dog because he's as happy being loved on as played with. They do tend to be very affectionate, and are usually clingy always wanting to be at the owners feet. If this isnt a problem they may very much love the cute actions and wrinkly lil faces of the Pug. Good Luck and tell them ANY dog they are willing to love will benefit as well as they will.

Maybe your aunt and uncle should not have a dog. An hour a week and a little more on the weekend is not enough.

If you do not have the time to properly spend and or train a puppy DO NOT GET ONE !

You will never train a puppy correctly with an hour a week. Dogs, puppies, and or any animal that is a pet needs lots of attention. You didn't say but I would guess to say that the puppy is crated through out thew day when no one is home........ever been to a zoo lately, they now put animals in area's that appear like their proper habitat......no longer in cages or crates.

Maybe you can suggest to your Aunt and Uncle a pet rock, it only needs an hour a week and lil more on the wekend !

I would go for the Golden. They a somewhat easier to train, and are also slightly 'lower key' than Spaniels. They are both good dogs but the Golden gets the edge with me.

Why buy a breeded dog when there's dogs that are just like like any fullbreeded dog? They need a home and are good dogs. There's too many animals out there that need a home.

But I'd go with the spaniel.

Before they make a decision, they should investigate different breeds and amount to exercise they require, what kind of grooming they may need, breed inherent disorders.... and what about a mixed breed? They are most times calmer and healthier.

why dont you suggest a staffordshire???..in my experiences with owning and breeding these wonderful dogs i have found they are really placid, are very easly trained house trained, also very loyal dogs and are fantastic with kids...but if they have set their minds on one of the two dogs mentioned..i would say go with the golden retriever...good luck to your uncle and auntie in finding a puppy...
