Jump up and down like the birds do.

You could run a hose all night. That will drive them to the surface. Why not just buy a can of worms from the bait shop? It's cheap and won't run your well dry.. If you really want to do the worms yourself, set up some bins so you'll always be able to get to them. All you need is a couple of worms to start with, bed of newspaper and a lump of horse manure from a horse that hasn't been wormed. Drop in food scraps every so often and you'll have a ready supply of worms.

Use a bucket of water with some (not too much) fairy liquid(detergent) in it.It works a treat. We used this method in school to estimate the number of worms in a field. We marked out random
1m square plots sprinkled the solution ,waited a couple of minutes and up come the worms. The trouble is,the worms are mostly the big soil worms, much, much better for fishing are the brandling worms found in dung-heaps and manure piles. If you live near a farm ask the farmer if you can collect some...they are much more effective and wriggle about much more than those deep, big ones.

You prepare a mixture of warm water and mustard, the dry type. Mix well so it is not to thick but still runny. Then, look for small holes in your lawn around the grass etc and pour the liquid down the holes, a bit at a time. Within 60 seconds, the worm will shoot up out of the hole and then wash it off in a bucket of clear water, This removes the mustard from the skin of he worm. I have done this for years and it works.

In the World worm charming competition - washing up liquid is banned as it gives an unfair advantage to the charmers. But with gathering worms for fishing alls fair! A bucket of soapy water will bring them to the surface. Tight lines.

Birds tap their feet on the grass to attract worms to the surface. You could try tapping a stick or twigs or something similar to do the same. Or you could dance around your garden like that prat in Lord of the Dance & Riverdance. You'll have worms and entertain the neighbours at the same time!!!

The best way to gather worms is water the ground and go out after dark with a flashlight and pick them up. A red lens seems to work best. Soapy water also works but make sure you rinse them off in water as soon as they come to the surface. I'm hesitant to post this, but my grandfather used to "shock" them to the surface. He had a pitchfork with one side of an extension cord wire wrapped around a tine. He'd water his grass, push the pitchfork into the wet ground and plug it in. Not the safest method, but very effective. Like electro-shocking fish for stream studies I suppose. I'd stick to the flashlight at night.

Electricity works. Put to metal rods in the ground and hook power to them. The worms should come right to the top. If you have a mulch pile somewhere, rake back the mulch. You should be able to find some under there too. I used to keep some mulch spread out just for that purpose. It holds moisture under it which attracts the worms.

NewGran is correct. A bucket of warm soapy water will bring worms to the surface. I've done it myself to have worms for fishing.

Ever see all the worms surface after a rain? Water your garden

Simulate rainfall by pouring water from sprinkler or watering can over the lawn, this will make the worms think it is raining and they'll come to the surface.
