When you turn you electronic on, the 555 timer will keep it on for a certain amount of time, adjusted by turning the small arrow. You can also set it continuing pulses, where it turns on and off automatically between time intervals.

you need to go to an electronic web site or it will take too long to explain. they are very useful device such as oscillator and flashing L.E.D
