There doesn't have to be a reason for depression - it is an illness that can happen to anyone. How long it lasts is up to you. When I was ill the first time I didn't realise it - my husband recognised the signs and sent me to the doctor. I was prescribed Lustral (Sertraline). It wasn't a miracle cure and took a couple of weeks for me to start feeling the benefits but after a while you realise you are no longer at rock bottom and that you are getting better. Getting outside and doing exercise also helps, as does talking about how you feel. It is a slow process and you will have good days and bad days but in time the good days will increase. I now recognise the symptoms myself and tackle the depression sooner so that I don't ever feel as bad as the first time. Don't feel guilty and don't let anyone tell you to snap out of it because you can't. Depression is not 'the blues' and it takes time and patience to get better.

Many things can cause depression, from an event in life to a chemical imbalance in the brain. Usually if it is something specific then you can deal with it and move on. A chemical imbalance needs to be treated or you won't correct it. There is a reason for depression, you just have to figure it out. If something specific did not happen than maybe you just feel like life has become humdrum and boring. Talking to someone (a counselor or friend) may help, try to get involved in something. If not seek out a psychiatrist. Drug therapy does not have to be lifelong. I know people who have used it just to get through ruts in life. The results can be amazing. But seek help if this has continued for a while and you can't shake it. Depression sometimes goes way after a few days, but can last a lifetime. No one knows. Good luck to you, hope you feel better

That's kind of the point - depression is when you feel sad all the time for no reason, even when you have everything you want. Several things can cause depression, but it's not recognised as much in men because they're less likely to seek help, maybe because they find it more difficult to talk about their feelings. I think you should talk to your doctor and discuss your options. You may find antidepressants help, but that's not your only option. Take a look at this website: http://www.clinical-depression.co.uk/Depression_Information/symptoms.htm then take it from there. I think just seeking help might make you feel more positive.

No one can really tell - endogenous depression (depression which comes "from within" - ie which has no obviousl cause) can last weeks or months or longer, but can usually be treated with medication or therapy. Talk to your doctor if you are worried. It does NOT last forever, even untreated depression will end eventually.

It is different for the individual, it will just carry on till you sort it out eg go to the GP. i had no reason for it and felt dreadful so was pushed towards my doctor and am starting to feel better now after two months and feeling run down and unhappy. Please don't put up with it its so treatable for everyone. good luck!!

depends a lot. could be just a bad week. might be a bad lifetime. there are up times, and there are down times, but the up times do not mean you no longer have the disorder.on the other hand the down times do not mean the end of the world.
