A better explanation....
This is due to excel having the format of cells general by default and thinking you are entering a date.
To change the format
1. Select all cells you want to apply this on.
2. Press Ctrl+1 OR Click Format Menu > Cells
3. In Numbers Tab Click the category Number
4. Select the decimal places to see
(if you want 20.5 as a date then click category date and select your format)
5. Click OK

if you are trying to enter a date as 20.5 then click on the cell that you want to change [format] then click on the format drop down menu, click on cells and at the bottom is custom or special, click on that and from that menu select dd/mm/yy then click within dd/mm/yy customise it with the delete and backspace buttons, thus dd m.
