I just asked him out for drinks, as a friendly gesture and he gives me this big speech about being out of the game, seeing someone and he's officially retiring from "playing the field" blah blah blah. I just wanted to take him out as friends, nothing romantic involved.

He also said "Thanks, I appreciate it". I felt kind of weird after that.

How should I have approached him with the offer for drinks in a platonic way?

You are interested? You never say. It doesnt sound like a problem at all. If he gave you a big thanx, its all still platonic. You are really unclear as to why this is an issue. You could get all wierd for fun and pop the tires on his car. Then you could feel bad for him and buy him new ones. You'd only be out about $700. and who knows...

Maybe he doesn't like to go drinking anymore. Anyway, you should have told him after he said that, you just wanted to go out for drinks as friends and nothing more.

Maybe because that's what he had in mind,...and you do to...but you don't have to admit it,it's okay! :-)

Platonic-drinks with friends, and not just the two of you!

If he is just your friend, then i dont think you should even speak to him after the humiliation. Or is this a case of 'more than meets the eye'???
