The Remington 870 is a fine shotgun. It is the most used shotgun that law enforcement has ever had. And it does real well for sportsmen too.

The first thing you need to do is to remove the knurled nut from the front of your forearm. The slide the barrel out away from the receiver. Press the forearm release and slide the forearm towards the receiver, opening the breech.

Take a cleaning rod and attach a new cleaning patch. Soak the patch in powder solvent and insert the rod into the barrel. With a back and forth motion, swab the barrel out until it's shiny inside.

Take a clean cloth and soak a small area of that cloth with powder solvent. Clean the inside of the receiver well. Also clean the outside of the weapon, getting all the grease and spent powder removed.

Take a clean patch and soak with a good grade gun oil. Swab the inside of the barrel. Take another clean patch and oil the inside of the receiver. Then lightly oil the outside parts of the weapon, ( receiver, barrel, magazine tube, etc. ) Take a cloth with a good grade furniture polish and buff the wood stock if you have one. If you have a synthetic stock, skip this proceedure.

Reassemble the weapon in reverse order, and wipe the entire weapon one more time before storage or use.

Best wishes!

The only thing I would add to CJ's answer is :
BEFORE you do any of his suggestions, properly ensure the shotgun is unloaded.

A side note to browning 1911:
On more than one occasion i have asked, at the gun store, prior to purchase, about the cleaning procedure of a particular firearm i was interested in, if it's an overly complicated, over engineered firearm that requires too much time, I simply don't buy it, this is why i don't own any of the Ruger 22 pistols.

C J is correct. That is the complete process for cleaning a smoothbore weapon.

My point is, that this is a question that is best possed BEFORE one acquires a weapon and not after. But, don't worry. Everyone has to figure this out some way. And atleast you are being pro-active about it.
