Formatting in MS Word is for changing how your document looks. You can change the size, colour, spacing, and type of font. You can also add special effects like underline and bold to text, make numbered or bulleted lists or use a drop-cap at the beginning of paragraphs. You can determine how your paragraphs are aligned; left, right, center or justified and you can indent lines of text or set it in columns. These effects are nice to have, but perfectly presentable documents can be typed up in a 'plain text file' program like Notepad which has no formatting options.

Rtf format is like a word document with with very simple features. Back in the days where word did not exist there was a chance to edit document on a writer that could do some things like word but by far not them all. If you are editing something using word you should use a format like .doc (or the new .docx). You can lose lots of formatting information and even images if you use the rtf.

Formatting is meant by destroying all the previous data and preparing it to put new one. eg. formatting a floppy erases all previous data and prepares it for data to be 'written' on it again.
Yeah, you should format your system drive at least every 6 months. It keeps your computer in peak shape and highest efficiency cause it cleans the registry of all the log clutter.

How u manages to press "v" instead of "i" is beyond me, lol. Sorry, anyway, the formatting of the file is the way it's saved. ms word can open most text formats. try to get a different program to open your documant. If it is .PDF, use adobe reader
