Optical is usually for audio.
If this output you can connect it to sound amply.

The optical output is to send a Digital Dolby sound signal to your surround sound audio receiver. It is the only way to enjoy 5.1 audio from your TVs HD tuner.

I just use the optical outputs on my DVD. cable, laser disk, laptop and Satellite directly into my Star Wars George Lucas Films Receiver unit.

Normally the optical output is used only with the HDMI INPUT to send Digital Dolby sound signal to your Audio Amplifier.....that's about the only way to get TRUE DOLBY AUDIO into the amp....

I just use the optical outputs on my DVD and Satellite directly into my Dolby Amp.....

You can verify this by selecting EACH INPUT on your TV and seeing if the Optical OUTPUT is lit up.....
