You can, and yet, you can't. While your computer is defragmenting, It is trying to move data blocks around and put them more in order. As long as your Internet program isn't trying to cache anything, it will run out of your RAM only and not affect the defragmenting. It is best, though, not to run anything while defragmenting because if you add any new information to the hard drive, the defragmenter will restart.

Not only have I had no luck with that, but I find it better to close all running programs (ctrl+alt+del) except explorer. That's with Windows Me. Otherwise it keeps restarting endlessly because things are always being rewritten to the hard drive by other programs while defrag is trying to sort them out.

apparrently defrag can't work on files that are in use, so if you are working on pc during this process then you will not get a proper result. i got round this and other problems by installing a second tower which i have K.V.M 'd together so i can still go on net, listen to music, play games etc during defrag, disk burning, virus scans etc at full speed without leaving my seat.

Man just leave it to defrag itself, but if u run any program it will go slowly.
