Assuming Moses is an actual historical figure rather than a literary figure, we still don't know exactly what he wore. Nor do we know the conditions under which he would have climbed a mountain. Besides, even if the story is true, there are plenty of mountains that aren't that hard to climb with sandals and a loose robe. They would be relatively low mountains rather than the major alpine peaks that require ice axes, pitons, and other specialized gear.

Moses did climb up the heights of Mt Sinai wearing sandals and a robe( or what the Jewish people call their robes). He followed a path that others used when they went up to talk to God . When he was home . signaled by lighting and fire on top of the Mount.

Who said that's what he was wearing? Did you read that in the bible or see it on a movie? If he was wearing that, I'm sure he knew how to climb in sandals because he had been wearing them his whole life. Nikes weren't around back then so he really had nothing to compare it to. You do the best you can with what you got.

I personally don't recall a description of either how he was dressed or equipped. Since people did climb mountains back then too, I assume they weren't idiots about it.
