Many prisons are overcrowded, so the result is a revolving-door justice system. We need to lock criminals up and KEEP them there!
It doesn't have to cost alot. The Sheriff of Maricopa County, Arizona has built tent-jails that can house thousands of inmates at a fraction of the cost of traditional buildings.

azchic84: I hate to tell you this, but Sheriff Joe just runs the prison. He wasn't the judge who sentenced your b/f.

If People would remember the ten commandments and follow the laws of the land there would be no need of jails. I think a lot of people do things just to see if they can get away with it, its a buzz for them. Then there are others who are too lazy to work and are thrown into prisons to have a place to live. Our prisons here in North America are a comfortable place to live with good food and TV and are better then some people live at their homes. If the jails were like those in the middle east or African countries they would not break the laws as they would not want to be in prison. The world does not owe them a living,

Prisons would not be so overcrowded of they would treat drug addiction as a medical problem. Prison should be for violent offenders. People going in with a bachelors in drug possession come out with PhD's in more serious crimes.
i dont see how putting an addict around a bunch of killers and rapists is "rehabilitation".
That is the point right? When one's debt to society is paid, they are supposed to reenter society and change their ways.
They come out worse than when they go in.
BTW, they are building MANY more prisons. we have 2 Million people in prison for gods sake, no 1 in the world

They are building them,in fact this country builds more prisons than schools.I wouldn't be so quick to condemn. At anytime everyone could be incarcerated. There are people who belong locked up but their are also those who are in need of Re-hab instead of the penal system.I did 4 yrs for possession of prescription medication with a DWI.I was not dealing drugs only obtaining them for myself.I was Guilty but I was addicted to pain killers after being shot in the military.Over prescribed and I liked them and got addicted. But I was locked up with 2 time child molesters who only got 2 or 3 years.Who is sick me or them.Who is treatable me or them?I didn't ask for my sickness but these kind prey on children,it disgusts me.I lost all faith in our judical system, and you would not believe how many of these men are in prison just wating to get out and do it again!!

We already lock up a higher percentage of our population than any other country in the world. More prisons would only mean more people going throught the revolving door. You explain why a kid can go to prison for having a bag of pot, but George Bush can be President after snorting coke and maybe I'll reconsider my opposition to throwing everybody in prison.

because that would mean admitting that we have a problem. it's like the old joke, "you're not an alcoholic if you don't go to the meetings." some people find Denial Land to be a very nice place and they choose to reside there all year long. unfortunately, those are usually the people in a position to do something.

Because it is more fun to let people go that we lock up than it is to admit it is cheaper to build prisons than to continue to have misery wreaked thru burglary, murder, rape, etc.
The true cost of crime is far more than the cost of imprisonment. I bet State Farm would help pay for prisons if they would keep the burglars inside.

The cost of the building is really insignificant in comparison to the cost of the people it takes to runs things.
There are instances of places where brand new buildings aren't used becauase the cost of running it is too much.
