Drinking a lot of water helps to flush things from your body. It may help your skin, but not a lot. It will help your digestive tract though. You have to get lots of vitamin C. Rose and green teas are good. Kiwi is also great for your skin. Check out some of the health sites for more info. I use a goat's milk and rose lotions from Crabtree and Evelyn, which really help keep my skin healthy.

An average person should have a little over 2 liters of water a day. As for benefits, drinking 2 times the normal/recommended amount of water a day will likely not give you many added benefits from just drinking 2-3 liters a day. You may as well not drink quite that much, if it is difficult to drink that much.
Getting enough water definitely helps the appearance of skin. Water assists in the flushing toxins from the body (allows the kidneys to perform their task properly). It carries nutrients through the body and keep the cells functioning properly. Drinking water is also good for your muscles (helps prevent cramping and maintains muscle tone). Plus, it helps to increase your energy level and helps lubricate the joints.

No it will not harm you in anyway, as a matter of fact that might not even be as much as your body requires depending on your muscle mass, over all body mass and activity level. Soda and coffee (caffeinated drinks) really should not be included in your count of daily water intake. The sugars dehydrate your body as well, caffeine is a diuretic, so your body is having no benefit of the hydration. For whom is 2.5 litres a day recommended? And whom advises that? You need more reliable sources. The suggestion of 8 glasses of water a day is the bare minimum the average person needs for optimal bodily functions. Holding your pee does not hurt your kidneys, as urine is not stored there, its your bladder that is hurting because it is being stretched. Yes, this can do long term damage putting you in diapers later in life. A healthy, properly hydrated person will have little to no odour or colour in their urine. The vast majority of North Americans can not tell the difference between hunger and thirst, confusing thirst for hunger and when you FEEL thirsty your body is already a minimum of 1% dehydrated. If your kidneys work the way they should, you will not flush out anything needed in your blood. Healthy kidneys keep in nutrients, electrolytes, etc that your body requires and puts out what is in excess and toxins. If you chugged so much water that your stomach hurt that would be bad for you. If you drank well over 8 litres of water a day not in the heat, and not working hard it would start to be a strain. There is a formula to find how much water you should drink in a day, I don't have it in front of me currently nor do I feel like going to look for it, BUT I can tell you that I stand under 5' tall and weigh about 130 lbs (post-partum), I'm very active and nursing and I should be drinking about 5 litres a day for optimum health. Since I've been properly hydrated I've gone off asthma meds, my skin is improved and I don't get sore from hard work outs. Happy Drinking!

drinking too much water can cause an electrolyte imbalance. don't believe me: ask a marathon runner.
you can cause your heart to stop, or your brain to swell and push out of your skull into your spinal column.
you need about two liters of water a day. you could safely drink more, spaced throughout the day, but be sure you're eating properly.

5 Liters of water sounds like WAY TOO MUCH. But, I'm no doctor. However, if you drink too much water, you can get hyponatremia. See this site on water intoxication and ask your doctor to be sure.
