Hello John

I think that depends on the round your playing. If your just out to enjoy the day and practice on the course as many of us do and not tracking score then I say no problem with kicking it out from behind the tree.

However when playing for score then the ball must be played where it lies, the rewards for being honest in this great game far out weight shaving a stroke or two. The handicap system in golf levels the playing field so all are competitive unless one shaves strokes to get a lower score and then winds up with a lower handicap which will frustrate them when playing in a tournament.

One only cheats themselves by not playing by the rules.

I say this from experience because many years ago as a new golfer I also used the foot wedge to help my score but I have long since gotten over that.

Play it where it lies and you will increase your enjoyment of this great game.

Leon

I was watching a show that showed Fred Couples, I think it was. He said that if you always kick your ball out of bad places then when your in a tourney and can't kick it, you don't know how to play out of the bad stuff. If it takes you three shots to get out, you've had three opportunities to practice that shot. He even said he'd hit it into trouble just to see how he'd play it out. I liked that answer.

If it was for money though, I might kick it.

I would always play it as it lies. if i was just playing for practice by myself, and i had plenty of time, I might drop another ball and play the hole out with both balls.

always play it where it lies, no fluffing, no 'dropping for one', no mulligans...its a game where you check your mental as well as your physical game...besides you already know exactly what you scored, its what you write down that shows character...
