The big issue now is one of pollution. Electronics contain a lot of undesirable metals. The manufacture produces a waste problem and since many of the products wind up in a dump in a short time (computers by the ton, ditto monitors) there is a serious problem in getting rid of all the toxics. Around my house (California) you have to take computers, monitors, printers, and the like to a special dump facility so they can be specially handled, not just dumped with the general garbage. The European Union has passed regulations removing lead from solders used in electronics. Mercury cell batteries have disappeared, as have Nickle-Cadmium rechargeable batteries.
