The top 35 teams in OWNER points are guaranteed a starting position in each race. The top 35 owner cars from last year are "in the show" for the first five races of this year. After the first five weeks it is the current top 35 that are in the show automatically.

The car owners compete for a seperate award from the drivers. The manufacturers compete for a sepertate award of their own too.

perry l gave you the #1 reason. also, if qualifying is rained out anytime during the year, the starting lineup is set by owner points.
