I keep my lenses with their hoods on for protection against stray lights or other people's flashes, and also as a bit of protection from airborne dust/dirt. I also keep a UV filter on the lens to protect the front glass element from airborne dust/dirt, accidental scratches and fingerprints. It's easier to replace a filter (and MUCH cheaper) than an expensive lens.

My lens hood is always on.
The people above bring up some great points
1 - You can't control every light source so the hood helps stray beams.
2 - It protects from color casts caused by close and vibrant colors
3 - It protects the lense should you drop it - the hood extends past the glass.
4 - It's convenient. When I photograph a wedding, taking the hood on and off repeatedly is just a pain in the ****

I leave mine all most all the time for the same reasons mentioned above. I was shooting with a f/2.8 telephoto this morning without the hood but that was only because I was shooting indoors with under a lighting situation I knew very well and knew I wouldn't be using the camera but for a few shots before it went back in the bag.

It's only needed in sunlight, but I keep mine on the lens all the time, because it's easier that way. It causes no harm for it to be there, where it won't get lost.

Keep the hood on when you are not taking photos, it prevents dust and blemishes and scratches on the lens.
